Do you love Nutella but hate the sugar content? Maybe you stopped buying it because you realized that almost every available option seems to include palm oil, which despite claims from big companies is never really truly "sustainable". You want to indulge in this sweet and creamy treat, but you haven't found a viable option that is both ethically sourced and tasty...
I got you!
Plant Dog has their own "Nutella", with only two ingredients: carob & hazelnuts! Both ingredients are sourced from a small nut-butter manufacturer in Albany, New York. So you can rest assured that you're not endangering anyone with your sweet indulgence.
But is it tasty? I'll admit, it's not going to be what you're used to with your regular Nutella or even other store-bought brand. Those almost always include "sugar" as the first ingredient, followed by palm oil or some other seed/vegetable oil. This has a more subtle, natural taste. Its consistency isn't as smooth and spreadable either. But yes, it tastes good! Especially if you get used to having more real food. Our society is quite accustomed to processed sugars and seed oils, but our natural palette can appreciate so much more if you start cutting those out of your diet.
What's great about this option, is YES your dogs can share it too! In fact, it was released FOR dogs!
Carob is a common alternative to chocolate, often used for children too. Why? Unlike cacao/chocolate, it contains no caffeine, and has a lower fat and sugar content. It's not bitter like cocoa, and is actually known to have a milder flavor, both sweet and slightly nutty. This makes it an easy ally to hazelnut and explains why this combo is so naturally yummy!
Of course, these are treats, and should never be fed as a main meal-- for you or your dogs! But next time you're looking to shake-up your dog's lickmat enrichment, or looking for a dog-safe frosting for your buddy's birthday cake, remember this option! And don't be afraid to try it for yourself. I like to add it to my ice cream, or make a milkshake with it. 😋
